“Alaska needs teachers who want to make a difference in the lives of our state’s children and to improve the quality of life in our communities.

We need more teachers who know our state well: its history, geography, economy, cultural richness and diversity, languages, and beauty. Currently Alaska hires more new teachers from outside of the state than it does those who’ve been educated in Alaska. Teachers are in demand in many parts of our state, and especially in rural areas. Certain subdisciplines in the profession, such as Special Education and Math/Science--are in demand in communities large and small. There is great desire in the state to educate more teachers from minority backgrounds—particularly Alaska Native teachers—so that the makeup of teachers across the state mirrors the student population and demographics of our communities.”

Free Tuition for Alaska Native Students at Alaska College

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The only federally recognized tribal college in Alaska announced tuition will be waived for all Alaska Native students starting next semester.

Pearl Brower, president of Ilisagvik College in Utqiagvik, said she hopes waiving tuition will boost the college’s native student enrollment, Alaska’s Energy Desk reported Thursday.

The college has one of the highest non-native enrollments among the nation’s tribal colleges and universities. It has about 700 total enrolled students each semester, just more than half of which are usually natives, Brower said.

Greatland Section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

Scholarship application for Alaskan female high school seniors who are planning to pursue a degree in engineering.

Alaska Society of Professional Engineers (ASPE) Anchorage Chapter Scholarship

Through the Alaska Engineering Education Foundation (AEEF) and Anchorage Engineers Week we fund several scholarships. There are two AEEF scholarships awarded state-wide--one for $2000 through AEEF, awarded as $1000 over a two-year period and a second, from ASPE is $1500. There are also several awards offered at the local level through our annual Engineers Week celebration. The number and amounts of those scholarships vary depending on the amount of money raised during our fundraising efforts. Last year, there were over $30,000 dollars in scholarships were awarded and some single scholarships were over $4,000! This one application will place a student in consideration for MULTIPLE scholarships

To help encourage more participation from the rural school districts, we have created two pools for evaluation. Students in the Anchorage, Mat-Su, and Kenai Peninsula school districts will be evaluated separately from other students in southcentral Alaska. This means that small school students will be competing against other small school students. So please encourage your students to apply!

Applicants must use the 2018 application to qualify for an award. Please note that the deadline for submittal is January 19, 2018. Winners will be announced the week of February 18. Students must plan on attending an ABET accredited engineering program and the funds will be sent to the financial aid office of the college or university.

The application is also posted on our foundation webpage (http://alaskaeef.org/scholarships/). I appreciate your help in getting our application out to all seniors considering engineering who might benefit from additional funding assistance.
